Money saving tips for skin care

The TRUTH: You do NOT need to spend a lot of money to get great skin. In my book, The Skin Regime; Boot Camp for Beautiful Skin (yes, a shameless plug), I write—among other things—about this truth, and expose why Big Beauty Companies in Department Stores overcharge for their products which are not even as effective as those we sell (another shameless but true plug!) Furthermore, you can give yourself at-home peels and use great products and get the skin you want for far less money than salon costs.

The first way to save money is to learn what your skin needs so you can do it yourself. My book, along with tons of fabulous articles on this website, can teach you about your skin and what to do. You can also call us for a personal consultation at 800-917-3155.

Here are some other great ways to save money on beauty and skin care:

1. Pay attention to discounts and deals being offered by us (and other sites that offer your favorites) and buy before you run out of your products: If you wait until you run out, there might not be a sale offered, and then you might need to pay higher prices.

2. Sign up for savings and rewards cards at large drugstore chains like CVS. I have a card with them and have signed up for the online bargains; with their coupons and special discounts I have saved a phenomenal amount of money: Over $700 dollars last year! Because they sell so many other products (not just beauty and skincare) I plan my shopping to take advantage of their frequent 25% and dollars-off coupons and buy everything from laundry, beauty, medical and office supplies—and it adds up!

3. Is there a beauty or massage school near you? They often offer services for a huge discount for haircuts, manicures and other services for far less than salons. Yes, they practice on you, but if you just need a trim, you are not taking much of a risk.

4. Multi-task your products. You don’t need a separate product for everything; for instance, your hand moisturizer can be used as your all-over-your-body moisturizer. A small amount of hair conditioner makes a great shaving lotion. Cream blush can double as a lip tint. One of my favorite products, Emu oil, can be used on your cuticles, face, hair, body—it is a fabulous all-around moisturizing oil. And you can likely use your facial moisturizer as your eye-cream unless you have specific issues you are trying to correct.

5. Check out generics or copies of your favorite products. Major drugstore chains often have virtually-identical copies of more expensive products, everything from hair care to moisturizers to over-the-counter medicines. Usually, the only difference is a very small change in the fragrance or an insignificant ingredient; for instance, instead of using 46 percent of a base or filler, they will use 45 percent—this will not change the effectiveness of the product because the active and important ingredients will be in the preparation at the right amounts. Read the ingredients on the labels and you will see.

6. Don’t risk money on full sizes of new products. Many department stores, Sephora, and here at Platinum Skin Care will give you free samples of products to try before you buy. Just ask!

7. Make your own products: You can search the web for simple recipes that use eggs, lemons, vegetable oils, and other edibles to make masks and hair treatments. For instance, you can make an easy body scrub by mixing Kosher salt with olive oil and a couple tablespoons of lemon juice.

8. Buy big. If you love a product and know you will use it up, you get more bang for your buck by purchasing in larger sizes. If you don’t want big bottles cluttering your counter and medicine cabinets, label travel-size containers and pour in what you need.

9. Use less. More is not necessarily better! You can get your hair and skin clean without using gobs of product. Are you guilty of letting too much go down the drain? Try less and see how it works for you!

10. Return it. No need to rue the bad purchase: Most major drugstore and department stores will refund you for a product you hate if you used very little of it. Keep the receipts.
