Many Moisturizers and Emollients Damage Skin

From Skin and Allergy News, April 1997.

Many moisturizers and emollients sold by major skin care companies delay the healing of irritated and damaged skin and make the situation worse by inhibiting natural skin repair. According to Dr. Halker-Sorenson (Skandborg, Denmark), new computerized instruments have demonstrated that many popular moisturizers increase skin damage in methods similar to skin irritants.

Traditional skin moisturizers are formulated from a variety of low-cost oils and water-soluble chemicals that wet and loosen the skin's layer of outer protective proteins and also cover the skin with fats that impede water loss. This provides a brief moisturization of your skin but degrades the skin's protective properties against bacteria and viruses. Such moisturizing creams are a mixture of oil and water plus emulsifiers, stabilizers, preservatives and other chemicals. There is little evidence that such creams have any beneficial effect on skin.

Biological oils aid with skin moisturization without causing skin damage. Emu Oil is very similar in composition to human skin oils and acts to replenish skin lipids. In both oils, mono-unsaturated oleic acid is the most prevalent, then palmitic acid, followed by the essential fatty acid, linoleic acid. This may be the reason for the positive actions of emu oil on human skin. (Zemtsov et al 1996)

While lipid replenishment methods are still being developed by dermatological scientists, emu oil is already a very good natural oil for lipid replenishment. It comes from small ostrich-like bird. The emu (Doromiceius novae-hollandiae) is the world's second largest bird, only behind the ostrich. An adult bird stands 5 feet tall, weighs 120 pounds, and can run 30 miles an hour. The species may have existed for 80 million years, and survived when the dinosaurs perished 65 million years ago.

Healing the Skin

Australian aborigines discovered the benefits of emu oil many thousands of years ago and used its helpful properties on damaged and sunburned skin In more recent work, a study at Texas Tech reported that topically-applied emu oil reduces burn pain as effectively as 600 milligrams of Ibuprofen taken 3 times daily.

  • Emu Oil is a healthy, complex, topical or ingestible oil, which contains a natural anti-inflammatory and is trans-dermal. In addition to reducing swelling and stiffness in joints, it reduces bruising and muscle pain. Professional sports trainers and players recognize the benefits of emu oil.

Politis and Dmytrowich (1998) found that if emu oil was applied immediately after a wounding injury, it delayed healing. However, if applied 2 days after injury, it then aided the healing process. So for skin repair, first use copper-peptides, then later start using the emu oil.

Skin researchers at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston reported that emu oil at up to 100 % concentration in lotions to be non allergenic, non-comedogenic, have low irritation potential, and to be bacteriostatic.

How Does Emu Oil Work?

Emu oil works better than other natural oils for several reasons:

  1. Emu oil is almost 100% triglyceride lipid. Triglycerids (a type of fatty compound) are abundant in human skin lipids, meaning that the composition of fatty acids in human skin is very similar to that of emu oil. This makes the absorption of emu oil into human skin faster and more effective.
  2. It is high in oleic acid, which increases its ability to carry compounds through the skin.
  3. It does not contain phospholipids, which make absorption more difficult. This absence of phospholipids makes emu oil highly penetrating and allows it to absorb through the skin more easily.

Who says that Emu oil works?

We know that Emu oil works in numerous ways, and so far the United States Government has issued patents on Emu oil for the following properties. Several more are in the works!

  • Reduces inflammation caused by arthritis
  • Prevents or reduces severity of nosebleeds when applied to the nasal passages
  • Helps prevent scarring if applied to a recent cut or burn
  • Aids in erasing or diminishing stretch marks and other skin blemishes

Acne, eczema, psoriasis and dandruff

Acne sufferers, do not hesitate to use this as a daily moisturizer! It is wonderful for helping to control acne! It will also help to reduce the inflammation of any blemishes you already have.

Emu oil acts as an anti-inflammatory, reducing the irritation and itchiness commonly caused by acne and eczema lesions, as well as other skin diseases. The anti-bacterial agent naturally found in emu oil, when combined with proper skin care, will help to decrease the chances of infection and blemishes. Use it along with your topical blemish applications for quicker results! Emu oil promotes healing and helps to prevent scarring.

Acne and eczema often affect the hairline as well, so in addition to using a gentle facial cleanser containing emu oil, add a few drops to your shampoo and/or conditioner!

Diminish Wrinkles and Other Signs of Aging?

Emu Oil is a natural emollient. Emu oil helps combat the effects of the aging process. Research has shown emu oil can thicken the skin, which reduces the appearance of aging.

It has been found that the application of emu oil to the skin thickens the tissue by as much as 14%. Age spots and wrinkles become nearly unnoticeable, and skin takes on a more youthful appearance. Emu oil is highly penetrating, bringing moisture deep into the skin, healing dryness, cracking and itchiness. Emu oil also has natural sun-protection properties and can be an important ingredient in sunscreen, as well an important part of sunburn treatment. Wearing a sunscreen (with or without emu oil) is an important step in preventing wrinkles and skin damage caused by sun exposure.

How Can I Tell If Emu Oil is of High Quality?

100% pure emu oil is a totally unique natural product. For best quality choose oil that is cream to light yellow in color, odorless, and tasteless or very bland. A dark yellow, red or brown tint indicates a low quality product or a poor refining process.

What are the Different Grades of Emu Oil?

The American Emu Association defines three grades of emu oil: crude, once refined and fully refined. Emu oil for human use should be "fully refined," and not just filtered or refined. Our 100% Emu oil is fully refined and can be used topically and internally. It is good for several months past the date printed on the bottle. It can be refrigerated to double its shelf life! It will thicken when it is chilled. Let it stand out to liquefy before use.

How Do I Use the Emu oil?

Massage a few drops into the desired area (a little goes a long way!). Absorbs quickly and leaves no greasy feeling.

For facial skin care-Emu oil can be added as a top layer to our copper and glycolic acid products to enhance their absorption*. It can also be used as a daily moisturizer by smoothing a few drops over the entire face and neck area.

For irritations- Apply several times daily in the beginning, then as needed. Due to emu oil's transdermal properties it can increase the benefits of other products used simultaneously by bringing them into the epidermal layer of skin.

Because of emu oil's strong transdermal properties, please be careful what you mix emu oil with! Never apply emu oil during a chemical peel!

Wonderful
Rae Ann (Mansfield, TX) 6/1/2010 11:03 AM
I purchased this product after reading reviews on it and on recommendation in regards to after care of TCA peel. The bottle I orderd with my peel had leaked in the box, but Platinum promptly mailed a new, completely sealed bottle to me (thank you!). I believe that this product accelerated my healing time after I did the TCA peel. I have used it daily (often twice a day) since my peel and it has provided incredible moisture to my skin without feeling oily or greasy. My skin is very sensitive, but I have had not a single problem with this product. The benefits are amazing. Within an hour of putting it on a sore on my arm that I have had for weeks-it was almost non-existent. Cleared my daughters eczema breakout overnight. Put it on a burn from a 450 degree oven and 2 days later you would never know I had burnt my thumb. The uses for this product is endless. 4 of my friends have already ordered this item from Platinum after hearing my rave about it. Will continue to order this item from Platinum for years to come.

Face, hands, arthritis, OH MY!
Shannnon (from Florida) 1/29/2010 9:24 AM
I purchased a bottle of the Emu oil a couple of weeks back when it was on sale. In the past, I had gotten samples with my orders and used it only now and again. Since receiving the bottle, I've gone nuts with it. I had this 'thing' on my chin that would not go away.. Not a blemish, more like a bumpy cluster. Anyhow, in two days of using the oil at night only, it's GONE! I can admit that I was hesitant of using an oil on my face, but let me attest, this product is wonderful. I also am riddled with arthritis and it is so soothing that it surpasses the topical gel that my Rheumatologist has prescribed for my pain!! No more $50 co=pays for me--thank you Platinum! I've also used it on my cracked winter hands at night to have them still supple in the morning when I wake up. It's just unbelievable stuff!! I just started (last night) incorporating it into my nightly washing/ moisturizing routine and am excited to see the benefits! Platinum: Having items on (a good) sale is a great way for us to try product that we wouldn't otherwise try because of price or maybe we aren't fully aware of the products' benefits. Thank you for your continued generosity; we do appreciate it!

Emu Oil - "The Jack of All Trades"
Cheryl (Grayson, LA) 12/31/2009 1:50 AM
If you haven't tried Emu Oil you don't know what your missing! I had never tried Emu Oil until I purchased my first bottle with Platinum Skin , along with a chemical peel. I use this product after my peel and could tell the difference in my skin. It did not leave a greasy feeling, just seemed to soak in. During this time I was pregnant and had read reviews on other sites about Emu Oil and wrinkles and I thought why not try this on my stomach to help with any stretch marks I may get. I gained more weight with my second child and after having her noticed I did not get any new stretch marks, and the old ones I had were fadeing. I know this review is long, but you haven't heard how great this product is until you hear what all I've used it for. I had a c-section and used this on my scar, when I went in for my 6 week check-up my doctor asked me what I had been using on it, and I told him Emu Oil. My scar was already healed and had started fadeing. It's been 2 1/2 years now and you can not see where I was cut. Amazing!! I don't have many wrinkles on my face, a few smiles lines but if it works on old stretch marks and a c-section cut it's obvious it will work on smoothing out the wrinkles too. I use this for healing. People actually come to my house and ask if I have any. They've heard my stories about what I've used it for. In short I've used it for everything. My 2 year old after me telling her 100 times do not play with the soap got soap in her eyes, I knew the type of cry before I got to the bathroom and instantly I reached for the Emu Oil and pumped some in my hands rubbing them together and smeared it across her eyes rubbing it in, and she instantly stopped crying. It'd my little bottle of magic. I'm telling you guys you can use this for anything. Cuts, burns, insect bites, ulcer inside mouth, scars, wrinkles, sore muscles, best diaper rash treatment there is, and the list goes on, and a bottle will last you for a while.

Didn't like this product
Deborah ( NM) 11/18/2009 10:51 AM
I was hesitant to use this product because I have very oily skin, but it got such good reviews I thought I would try it after a TCA peel. It gave me a rash on top of my newly peeled skin. Won't use it again after a peel. May be good for the rest of my body but not my face. Sorry!!! ---Platinum--- Hmmm, generally speaking emu oil does not cause any rashes. I am wondering if maybe you had an issue with the TCA instead. That is quite probable since acids actually irritate the skin and could cause a rash in someone. Thank you for your comments.
