1. PRE-TREATMENT PROTOCOL

FOR ALL CHEMICAL PEELS

  • To obtain the best results from a chemical peel series, you must prepare your skin so the acids will penetrate evenly and effectively.
  • For a minimum of two weeks you will need to treat any pigmentation, pre-exfoliate the stratum corneum (outermost layer of skin), and help your skin reach a healthy, regenerative state with antioxidants and vitamins.
  • Begin and end each day by washing with a pH acidic cleanser.

It is recommended that ALL darker skin types, and those dealing with pigmentation issues (freckling, melasma, spots) pre-treat 2x per day for 2 weeks straight for mild peels, and 4+ weeks for stronger peels with a tyrosine inhibitor such as Fade Bright.

  • After cleansing, apply an anti-oxidant such as High Octane Vitamin C.
  • Protect skin with an SPF of at least 40 before going outdoors.
  • Each evening gently thin the stratum corneum layer by applying a layer of Vitamin A, such as our Fusion A .15, .25, .35, .55. Alternatively, you may use the Glycolic & Hyaluronic Serums to perform a similar function.

2. Precautions

When you are going to be performing a series of chemical peels it is imperative that you follow a guideline of precautions. There are many daily activities and ingredients that may increase your skin’s sensitivity levels or may compromise your results. Please adhere to this list and ask your doctor if you have a detailed question that is not covered here.

Basic Precautions

  1. A patch test is recommended to test for allergies and skin reactions prior to your first peel.
  2. Do not perform a chemical peel if you will continue to have excessive sun exposure.
  3. You should not have a chemical peel if you have used Accutane in the past year.
  4. Do not use Salicylic peel if you are pregant.
Do not use a Salicylic, TCA or Jessners peel if you are pregnant.
  5. Stop using all retinoids, Serum 15 or 30 and Triple Treat Body Lotion at least 4-6 days before performing a peel.
  6. Do not apply to irritated skin, sensitive skin, on any open wounds, or after extractions.
  7. Do not apply peel to skin that has been waxed or shaved within 24 hours.
  8. Keep peel solution at least a 1/4” away from eyes and mucus membranes , unless you are specifically spot treating the eye area. In this case, apply a thin line of barrier gel such as petrolatum around the lash line to prevent acid seepage. Use caution.

ADVANCED PRECAUTIONS

ADVANCED ADDITIONAL PRECAUTIONS

(including 70 glycolic and TCA usage).

Do not perform a chemical peel if you have active Herpes Simplex without an acyclovir prescription. Do not perform peels if you have warts, or a history of Keloidal scarring.

**With Glycolic 70 and TCA 30 follow dilution instructions found on page (8 and 15), do not apply full strength.

Avoid exercise and extreme heat to keep sweat from pooling under the skin as this may cause it to lift too early. Once the skin is actively shedding, sweat may freely flow out. If you have sweat bubbles on the skin do NOT pop them. Let them reabsorb back into the body.

Patch test Application

  • Cleanse, apply peel and rinse after a few minutes.
  • Facial peels, apply just below the ear, on the neck.
  • For body peels apply on the inner elbows or behind the knees.

3. HYDROXY ACID
GLYCOLIC - LACTIC - MANDELIC - SALICYLIC

1-LAYER PEEL APPLICATION

How much solution should I use?

Saturate your gauze pad with solution. Fold it in
1/2 and give it a light squeeze or shake it to remove excess drips. We want that pad WET... just not dripping wet. You are ready to apply.

APPLICATION DIRECTIONS

  1. Thoroughly cleanse all areas that are to be peeled with a deep cleanser such as: Revitalizing, Anti-Aging or AB.
  2. Gently wipe Prep A on all areas to be treated. If you do not have a prep solution, use Alcohol 90%, or pure acetone.
  3. Starting with your forehead, apply peel solution in a Horizontal motion until you reach your brow area. Swipe down each temple and between your brows. Continue moving down your face in a Horizontal motion until you cover your jawline. In a Vertical motion, lightly blend the peel onto the neck area so you do not have a line of demarcation.

*A stinging/itching/tingling sensation is normal during the peel process.

  4. Follow Time Guidelines on pages 8 and 9 to determine peel length for your acid and percentage choice.
  5. Apply Neutralizer and/or rinse well for 2-3 minutes with cool water. *Remove all traces of acid from skin.
  6. Pat skin dry and follow with a plain moisturizer such as Emu oil or Essentials Healing Blend.
  7. Make sure you use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 40 if you are going outdoors for a week afterwards.

5. BODY PEELING

BODY PEELING

*Excluding (neck/decollete) treat those as a face peel using milder acids and %'s

Many people mistakenly believe that peels are only for the face, when in fact acids can be used all over the entire body.

*Excluding mucus areas. The only difference when peeling the skin on the body is that it is much thicker (0.60mm compared to only 0.12mm) and will require a higher percentage of acid. It will also take a longer time to begin the flaking. The face will start peeling on day 2-3 and generally be finished by day 6-7. The body may not even begin peeling until days 10-14.

*Never peel the body more than 1x per month to avoid applying acid to skin that has not begun/finished its flaking yet.

If you have areas that are not completley done shedding, always wait until that is fully completed prior to doing another peel.

ACIDS RECOMMENDED FOR BODY PEELING

*TIP: The darker the skin, the longer the prep and the milder the % should be.

RECOMMENDED BODY PREP

  1. Wash with 15% Body Wash *gently if using puff. Stop any “scrubbing” at least 4-6 days prior to peel.
  2. Triple Treat 25% Acid Body Lotion daily for a minimum of 2 weeks to aid in thinning the skin.
  3. Apply Fade Bright 1-2x daily to help lighten, and/or prevent Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation.
    • Fitzpatrick 1-3 = 2 weeks minimum.
    • Fitzpatrick 4-5 = 4 weeks minimum.

Leave Peel On For At Least 10 Minutes.

Rinse, Pat skin dry, and follow with a plain moisturizer such as: Emu oil, Shea Butter, or our Platinum Essentials Healing Oil.

**TCA 30 Warning**

A single layer is recommended for body peels.
After several successful peels, a 2nd layer of 30 may be possible for some. Another option would be a second layer of a milder percentage of TCA such as a 13 or 20.

6. TCA & JESSNERS

MULTI-LAYER PEEL APPLICATION

LAYERS

1 layer = single application of acid. Multiple layers will be applied to progress the peel deeper into the skin – without washing off any previous layers. This method is most commonly used to increase exfoliation. If skin becomes frosted, or a white haze appears before your last intended layer, end immediately instead of progressing.

**ALWAYS pre-treat olive and colored skin with Fade Bright for 2 weeks prior to peel application.

  1. Thoroughly cleanse all areas that are to be peeled with a deep cleanser such as: Revitalizing, Anti-Aging or AB.
  2. Gently wipe Prep B on all areas to be treated. If you do not have a prep solution, use Alcohol 90% or pure acetone.
  3. Starting with your forehead apply peel solution in a Horizontal motion until you reach your brow area. Swipe down each temple and between your brows. Continue moving down your face in a Horizontal motion until you cover your jawline. In a Vertical motion, lightly blend the peel onto the neck area so you do not have a line of demarcation.
  4. Wait 5 minutes after 1st layer of solution was applied. If the skin is not white or hazy, you may proceed to add an additional layer of solution at this time. *DO NOT rinse between layers.
  5. Wait 5 minutes. *If you see frosting on only certain areas of your face, you may apply another layer to the areas that did NOT have a frost, or that have very light speckling.

WARNING

Always begin with 1-2 layers. Five layers is a natural time to move to the next percentage. An alternate option is to continue adding on more layers.

Do NOT increase by more than 1 additional layer at a time per treatment. Progress cautiously

TCA

  1. Once you have reached your endpoint, wait 5 minutes and then splash your face with cool -cold water, pat dry.
  2. OPTIONAL BOOSTERS: *CHOOSE ONE ONLY.

    Method 1:
Apply Luminosity 1x per day or until flaking starts. Avg. 3-4 days.

    Method 2:
Apply Dream Peel 1x ONLY after acid peel is completed
    .
*Do not add LM after DP.
  3. Apply healing products such as Emu oil or Platinum Essentials Healing Oil. *Optional Regenerate Epidermal Growth Factor.
  4. Apply SPF 40+ when going outdoors for at least 1 week.

JESSNERS

  1. For best results do not rinse acid off for at least 4 hours. After rinsing apply healing products such as Emu oil, Essentials Healing oil and/or Regenerate EGF. You may also apply Luminosity at this point... and then again 1x per day until flaking begins.
Advanced Application Method. *If you are layering Jessners + TCA you may leave them both ON. If you are also applying the Dream Peel**, then you may leave all three products on the skin for 6-8 hours. *If you are
applying the DP then you will NOT use Luminosity.
  2. Apply SPF 50+ when going outdoors for at least 1 week.

8. TCA CROSS METHOD

TCA CROSS is the Chemical Reconstruction of Skin Scars using a high percentage of Trichloroacetic Acid to fill in depressed and ice pick scarring on the face and body. This method may be used separately or in conjunction with a full-face chemical peel. If you are applying both methods, begin with the CROSS method and then follow with the full face.

If your skin is ethnic in the Fitzpatrick 4-6 range, be sure to prep with Fade Bright for 4 weeks prior to doing the CROSS. We also suggest using a 20% or milder if you are prone to PIH.

APPLICATION DIRECTIONS

  1. While prepping skin, soak wooden pick in TCA solution of 20% or 30% for 30-60 seconds.
  2. Apply solution to the interior of depressed scar by applying a medium pressure with pick into the scar. This is NOT intended to cause bleeding but rather a little pinch. The “poked” areas should frost in 30-60 seconds (see photo on next page). You will see a white ring around the edge of scar. If you are also doing a full face peel you may apply a lower percentage of TCA to your face at this point. If you are doing the Jessners peel, we suggest performing that first, and then the CROSS.
  3. Splash skin with cool water to soothe and apply healing ointment such as emu oil or Platinum Essentials Healing Oilthe

AFTER CARE

A light skin-colored scab will form in 3-5 days for Fitz 1-3. If you are Fitz 4-6 a dark scab will form instead, DO NOT PICK THE SCAB OFF! As long as it is attached, collagen growth is happening within the deeper layers of skin. After a scab forms, you may discontinue ointment in favor of a drier serum such as Emu oil and CP Copper Serum or Super Cop 2x.

Seven to ten days after the peel, the scab(s) will fall off. You may or may not see an improvement at this time. You may begin using copper products as this point such as Super Cop 2x. Collagen production will continue for the next several months. You may repeat this CROSS application method ONLY once every 5 weeks for skin remodeling - never sooner. General improvement may be noticeable after two to three applications.

Frosting on a scar after TCA application. You may or may not see a frost this white. Do not continue adding more solution once the area has a frost. DO NOT apply again for 5 weeks.

9. Advanced Layering Methods

Peels such as Jessners, TCA and the Dream Peel can be layered to achieve great results. The most important rule to follow though is, always use each peel individually First, and understand what that is doing for your skin prior to combining it with another peel. We suggest using the peel at least 1-2x singly, prior to layering. When deciding on how many layers of each acid to apply. This is just like an individual acid peel. Start with no more than 2 total layers.

*Example: 1 layer of Jessners and 1 layer of TCA 13. Continue adding on no more than one additional layer each time you do the peel. Jessners =pigmentation or acne, TCA = scarring or antiaging. Add more of the acid that helps your skin’s needs the most.

There are a few combinations we can suggest

  1. For Aging and Pigmentation, layer Jessners + TCA. 1-2 layers
of Jessners + 1-2 layers of TCA.
  2. To increase the depth/benefits of TCA, use the Jessners as a first layer to prep the skin.
  3. To increase the flaking of either the Jessners* or TCA, add a single application of the Dream Peel.

*Since Jessners is not generally rinsed off, you may leave it (and the TCA) on the skin any time it is in a layered combination peel.
  4. Jessners plus TCA plus Dream Peel (or Luminosity Method/Fusion A .55) can be worked up to as a final combination as well.

Basic application

  1. Wash
  2. Prep B
  3. Layer 1 - 5 minutes
  4. Layer 2 - 5 minutes
  5. Layer 3 - 5 minutes
  6. Rinse or just end application
  7. Apply Finishing Layer of Dream Peel/LM or your healing products

*See detailed videos on our website of combination peels

10. Frequently Asked Questions

I THINK THE SOLUTION I PURCHASED WAS TOO STRONG FOR ME. CAN I LESSEN THE PERCENTAGE?

There are two solutions to this problem. #1. You may leave the solution on for a shorter time period. #2. You can mix the acid with another substance to dilute the percentage. With Glycolic, Lactic, Mandelic or TCA you can lower your percentage by mixing purified water (use a separate container other than the original peel bottle). To cut the percentage directly in half, mix equal parts peel to water. Salicylic CAN NOT be diluted with water, use alcohol as your dilutent.

I THINK THE SOLUTION I PURCHASED WAS TOO WEAK FOR ME. WHAT CAN I DO TO USE UP MY BOTTLE?

  • Leave your acid on for a longer time frame 60 minutes maximum.
  • Apply a slicylic 3 or 15% peel for 2 - 5 mintes, rinse then apply either the Lactic, Glycolic or Mandelic peel for a Bi-Phasic method
  • Find a friend that might want to start peeling and pass it on!.

I HAVE ROSACEA, CAN I STILL DO PEELS?

The only acid that has been approved for Rosacea use is the Mandelic Acid. Feel free to use Mandelic Azelaic Peel 22

APPROXIMATELY HOW MANY PEELS WILL I GET FROM MY BOTTLE?

  • 5ml = 3 peels
  • 1oz. = 16-20 1 layer peels
  • 2oz. = 32-40 1 layer peels

I DO NOT SEE PEELING, IS IT STILL WORKING?

Just because you do not see any visible flaking does not mean the peel isn’t working. The acid’s job is to dissolve the bond that holds the outermost layers of dead skin to the face. Most of the loosened skin comes off during your routine cleansings. If your skin “feels” smoother - it is working! *Remember, a peel is not a 1 time event. You should do a series of 6-8 peels before judging the effectiveness.

MY FACE TURNED BROWN IN SOME AREAS A FEW DAYS AFTER MY PEEL, IS MY SKIN BURNED?

All chemical peels are considered a “controlled burn”. We are using a chemical to produce a controlled injury to the skin. This in turn will promote the growth of new skin and an improved appearance. As the layers of skin become unattached and prepare to fall off, you may see darkening of the skin. This is normal and can be expected, especially from the deeper peels such as TCA and Jessners when multiple layers are applied. Keep your skin well hydrated and do not pick!
